1000 and more walks in Amsterdam

When you walk through a city where you have lived for a long time, you notice that all kinds of memories come to mind in many places. That's what this series is about. It's not a documentary, it's visualizing those memories. During these walks I took photos that I used to create the diary paintings. The rapid development of the computer also made it possible to use it to create images. The paintings and drawings are scanned. The photos are put into the computer. The various elements are then edited in the computer. The result can be shown in a slide series, printed on different materials or printed in a book.

diary paintings by year:

diary paintings

Around 1984 I started to make 'pictorial diary entries'. In this way I tried to capture the rapidly fading past and offer it a place in the present.

A fast, energetic style was needed, in which many paintings could be made at a high rate. After some time I began to bring photographs into the paintings, enabling me to work faster.

Gradually the photographs began to gain a more prominent position in my work. Fast developments in computer technology made it possible to manipulate photographs easier. The results of my photo manipulations can be considered as works of art in themselves.

Although my goal has always remained the same, the means to get there have changed in the course of time. Eventually, painting with oils evolved for me into painting with light.

The works are arranged per year and in chronological order:

diary paintings

1985-1986, 1987-1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997-1998, 1999, 2000-2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

1000 portraits:

portraits

On this website one can also find the painted portraits that were made from 1985. In 2006 the number of 600 was reached.
All the portraits measure 24 x 30 cm. They have been framed and dated seperately. However, they are to be shown together, 5 cm apart from one another. The overall shape of the work may vary; this will be determined by the available space.
The depicted persons are people I met in all kinds of circumstances and who made an impression on me in one way or another. They were memorized with the help of sketches and by memory and later on they were worked out at home.

600 portraits, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 cm, to be displayed together

In 2007 I started making a new series of portraits. They all have the same passport photo of myself as a starting point. This photograph is manipulated digitally until it is made into a new portrait. Like the painted portraits they have to be displayed together.

200 self-portraits, computer generated images, to be displayed together

In 2008 I added 100 computer generated portraits of M. to the portraits project.

In 2011 a series of 100 portraits, entirely 'painted' on the computer, was added to this project.

600 portraits in one installation

Photographs of the 600 portraits in oils can be shown on digital frames in slide shows. 4 Digital frames (150 photographs each can be placed next to each other in order to act as a whole.) The show can be accompanied by a soundtrack of footsteps and voices in the street. The installation is 30 cm high by 160 cm wide, but other combinations are possible.
